Introduction: Holy Cross Women’s College, Ambikapur was established in 1971 with Home Science department. I feel proud, happy and fortunate to present unto you the 49th Annual Report, brimming with triumphs of the staff and the students during the academic year 2019 - 2020.

College has the proud records of being one among the top Ten College’s in India and the only College in MP & Chhattisgarh which underwent accreditation by NAAC for the first time in 1998 and to receive 5-star grade which was the highest at that time. At present it is getting ready for the 4th cycle of accreditation by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

Holy Cross Women’s College, the first Women’s College in Surguja District of Chhattisgarh, has a dynamic and empowering educational environment for young women seeking, an undergraduate or post graduate degree in Science, Home-Science, Commerce, Computer Science and Arts. Inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ who came to give fullness of life to all and his call to spread the good news of love, peace, justice and equality and following the example of our founders Fr. Theodosius Florentini and Blessed Mother Maria Theresa Scherer, since its inception in 1971, it has been catering to the needs of women of this rural, tribal and backward area.

The college, in its sustained pursuits to empower young women, develops their capabilities through quality education based on values of life, in keeping with vision of the college, “Rooted on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ who Came to give fullness of life to all and inspired by the founders Fr. Theodosius and Mother Maria Theresa, the vision of the College is to build a home of faith a home of integrity a home of fruitful study in a culture of excellence sustained by a sound value system to empower women for social transformation and responsible citizenship.” And the mission Our Mission as Compassionate and enlightened leaders is to form women through its value based and Holistic approach to Education.” True to the Charism of our Congregation “Compassionate love for all, especially to the underprivileged”, Holy Cross Women’s College is Committed to radiate the light of God’s Compassion, truth and justice to all and especially to the young women of Chhattisgarh.”

Total 1601 students were enrolled in the college, 1451 in UG programmes and 150 in PG programmes.

 

The current new session 2019-20 of the college started with online admission facility from June 18, 2019, realizing the dreams of Digital Holy Cross. Fresher’s Orientation/Induction was organized from July 8 to July 13, 2019 to make the newly admitted students aware of the academic environment of the college. They were given information about the classes conducted in the college, rules, prospectus and facilities available in the college. Along with this, value-based education and employment-oriented education was also made aware.

In the academic year 2019-20, in university examinations, the students earned a place in merit list while maintaining the dignity of the college. The faculty of Home Science – 100%, faculty of Science – 88%, faculty of arts – 100%, faculty of Commerce – 82% and the results of all P.G. and P.G.D.C.A. examinations was 100%.

Student Union: According to the guidance of department of higher education and university student union was nominated on the basis of merit and on 3rd September 2019 an oath taking ceremony was organized. Students’ union were introduced about their positions and duties after the oath ceremony.

Activities:

Cells/Association/ Club: Various Cells and associations established in the college organized various competitions and activities.

  • In this a workshop on “Environment is just like our grandparents” was organized by Eco Friends Club.
  • Karate training and fitness program for women safety was conducted in August-September. 15 days water conservation campaign, National Graduate Physics Exam 2019-20 and organizing the Knowledge of Indian Cultural was special achievement of the college.
  • Deepti Verma, M.A. Economics participated in district level Indian Culture Science competition and ranked second position. Dr. Aruna Saket, Professor, Political Science was given award as best Nodal Officer for the year 2018-19.
  • One month training was given to the students in the college by Tata Company Mumbai and an interview was conducted on 16.01.2020. 12 students got placement at Nagpur.
  • 10 days “Jaanbo” program, camp and training program, voter ID verification and various programs were organized under SVEEP by the students.
  • The environmental protection message was given by Kulhad making training and its use, Chhattisgarhi dish making competition, carry bag making by Home Science Association, the center of attraction.

Competitions:

The students of our college participated in various competitions organized in different sectors or levels. In this, the B.Sc., final year student, Janani Priya of the college participated in the fancy dress category for the youth festival was selected.

Tribal dance competition was organized under SC, ST Welfare (AICUF) from 9th to 11th September 2019.

Students and tournaments:

In sports activities, according to tradition, the students of the college have represented the university at the zonal level, inter-university level, state level and national level that has been elevated the name of the college. The college has achieved distinctive achievements in the field of Kho-Kho, hand ball, volleyball, athletics and football. The college has also got the distinction of organizing State Level Basketball Tournament. College organized two days sports day on 13th and 14th January 2020 and the students enthusiastically participated in various sports competitions. Organizing faculty wise competitions was the specialty of this sports festival.

Extension activities/ Social outreach

National Service Schemes (NSS): National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. During these seven days camp at Ghanghari was conducted under NSS. Dr. Samendra Singh, State N.S.S. officer and assistant secretary, Chhattisgarh were present as special guest. Elina Lakra, B.Sc. 2nd year was selected in singing for national N.S.S. camp Assam.

NSS students are engaged in attending various activities such as Swachhta Pakhwada and Swachhta Awareness from 01/08/2019 to 15/08/2019 in which slogan writing, nuked natak, Swachhta awareness etc. highlighted, posahn aahar program (awareness about personal health, importance of health) on 17.09.2019, Raseyo Sthapna Divas on 24.09.2019, lecture on thoughts of Gandhi (speech and rally) on 02.10.2019, social camps (speech, rally, cultural program, drama, vermicompost making etc.) from 19.11.2019 to 22.11.2019, workshop on the occasion of constitution week celebration (social consciousness and legal awareness) on 26.11.2019, youth day celebration on the occasion of Vivekanand Jayanti (awakening among students about life of Vivekananda) on 12.01.2019.

National Cadet Corps (N.C.C.): The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the Youth Wing of the Indian Armed Forces with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis as a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, the Navy and the Air Wing, engaged in developing the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens.  Under this N.C.C. cadets of the college participated in the 10-days state level and joint annual training camp-9, Bilaspur, C.A.T.C. camp Raigarh organized at ITI Raigarh under ITI Raigarh. Tree planting in village Mahavirpur, Surajpur and cleaning work was done in district hospital Ambikapur. Legal awareness camp was organized in de-addiction center Nawapara, Govt. High School Khaliba, N.S.S. camp Ghanghari, Vikas Special School Vishunpur, and Naari Niketan Ambikapur under Legal Aid Clinic.  

True to the history and heritage of the Country, the NCC (Army Wing) is doing a commendable service in the College. It has traversed a long way in inculcating the self-discipline and the National spirit among the brave students of this college. There are numerous activities organized by this unit in the academic year 2019-20.

  • For the training of NCC cadets 28 CG BN Raigarh organized a CATC I camp at Govt. ITI College Raigarh from 01/05/2019 to 10/05/2019. In this event 10 cadets of the College participated.
  • International yoga day was celebrated in the Holy cross women’s college Ambikapur. In this event 35 cadets of the College participated, dated 21/06/2019.
  • For the training of NCC cadets 28 CG BN Raigarh organized a TSC camp at Govt from 07/07/2019 to 13/07/2019. ITI College Raigarh. In this event 10 cadets of the College participated.
  • For the training of NCC cadets 28 CG BN Raigarh organized a Joint annual training camp at Bilaspur from 14/07/2019 to 23/07/2019. In this event 10 cadets of the College participated.
  • Independence Day 15.08.2019 celebrations were organized at Govt. R. G. P. G. College Ambikapur Surguja. In this event 53 cadets of the college participated.
  • Tree plantation was done in village Labji on 20.08.2019. In this event 07 cadets of the College participated.
  • Under swachh Bharat Abhiyan, cleanliness was done on 28.10.2019 in District Hospital Ambikapur Surguja. In this event 25 cadets of the College participated.
  • For the training of NCC cadets 28 CG BN Raigarh organized a CATC camp at Govt from 21/11/2019 to 30/11/2019. ITI College Raigarh and Raipur. In this event 10 cadets of the College participated.
  • NCC Day function was celebrated in Govt. R. G. P. G. College, Ambikapur on 24/11/2019. In this event 53 cadets of the college participated.
  • Under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, cleanliness was done in Govt. Multipurpose H.S. School, Ambikapur Surguja on 07.12.2019. In this event 20 cadets of the College participated.
  • Republic day celebrations were organized at Govt. R. G. P. G. College Ambikapur Surguja on 26/01/2020. In this event 53 cadets of the college participated.
  • “B” certificate exam was held on 16/02/2020 in Raigarh in which 17 cadets appeared.
  • “C” certificate exam was held on 26/02/2020 in Raigarh in which 12 cadets appeared.

IQAC, Holy Cross Women’s College, Ambikapur, Surguja District, Chhattisgarh – 497001 helped students to be disciplined, energetic and actives through above activities. The most overwhelming thing is that the students in large number are participating in the multifarious activities of NCC and many of them have enchased the benefit of their participation to shape their future life.

 

Youth Red Cross Unit: Blood group testing, blood donation camp, First–Aid–Box distribution, tree plantation, water conservation awareness program, International Aids Day etc. was organized under Youth Red Cross Unit of the college.

 

Through the Red Cross unit students blood test for diagnosing blood group for all first-year students were successfully done.

  • On 08.09.2019 “International Literacy Day” organized a rally in village Dwarika Nagar, Surajpur district. Planted trees in order to preserve ground water level. Students put up some cultural program on literacy, such as dance and short drama.
  • Red Cross unit provided primary treatment for players during the State level basketball tournament, which was conducted on 19.09.2019.
  • Students and teachers donated blood in Holy Cross Hospital, Ambikapur on 22.10.2019 under Red Cross unit activities.
  • Red Cross unit conducted a competition on “Blood Donation” dated 23.10.2019 in which Sakshi Gupta, B.H.Sc. II, Sudha Rajwade, B.H.Sc., and Akanksha Kujur, B.H.Sc. secured first, second and third respectively.
  • On 01.12.2019, World AIDs Day students conducted AIDs awareness rally in village Mirgadanr, also performed nuked natak. With the response of the villagers, students were able to bring more awareness about AIDs and program was successful.
  • Two days sports day 13.01.2020 to 14.01.2020 was organized in the college in which Red Cross unit arranged for primary treatment.
  • Nearly 1596 students were the part of the Red Cross unit during the year 2019-2020.

Through this, the college has demonstrated the kind of leadership to inculcate the concern for the society. It is observed that the college is highly respected by the society for producing the students with human values.

Other Responsibilities: The assistant teachers of the college were entrusted with the responsibility of convener and convener for the selection for the State Level Youth Festival, Raipur.

In this sequence, with the financial support of Public Health Engineering Department, Ambikapur, a research project Surguja was done by Mrs. Alma Minj, assistant professor of MSW and on the topic of “Drinking water quality and Sanitation” among the villagers of the district.

In order to encourage the creative talent of the college students, the college magazine “Souvenir’s 36th was published and 37th is on progress.

In the direction of social responsibilities, the college has taken a pledge for its all-round development, a village named Mirgadand by adopting it.

College is proud of having Dr. Sachin Mandilwar, Assistant Professor of the faculty of Arts of the college, who is selected through Bihar Public Service Commission of Magadh University, Bodhgaya. He has served our college for last 14 years.

Chhattisgarh state to be linked with Gujrat under the central governement's ambitious plan "Ek Bharat, Shresth Baharat". In this context, a Shresth Bharat Club has been formed in the college and college has been integrated with Nadiad Mahila Mahavidyalaya in Kheda district of Gujrat.

Workshop/Seminar/Skill development programmes:

Workshop on tribal dance was organized under SC, ST, Welfare (AICUF). On 9th to 11th September sports day was organized in St. Xavier’s B.Ed. College, Ambikapur. They also participated in jubilee celebration in national tribal federation, Bhopal from   25th to 27th October 2020.

An awareness program on gender issues was organized on world literacy day at Dwarka Nagar, Surajpur.

Inter religious meet was conducted to spread the message of unity in diversity on 4th November 2019 by USM unit.

Add on/Certificate COurces:

Separate Certificate course on Basic Computer to commerce, Science Streams, Arts Streams and Home Science are being conducted. They are as follows:

The students are encouraged to take up Research in their respective domains. Self-Learning is promoted through the Add on Courses and Value-Added Courses. The students are given opportunity to learn the art of doing a Project in House and Industrial Project.

Study tour/Industrial visit/field visit: 

  • Under the curriculum of CBCS Social outreach and skill development program, a total of 70 post graduate students were taken to the Adani Cold Field Parsa, Udaipur. 
  • In this sequence, the students of B. Com first year were taken to Devgarh for environment subject for the for year of graduation. 
  • In the educational tour activity, 58 students of the facultities of Science and Arts of our college were taken to Mumbai-Goa. 
  • In this connection, the students of Commerce went for tour to Kolkata-Digha in mid of February 2020.
  • Under the research activities, the college is given recognition of 5 subjects: Psychology, Economics, Commerce Michrobiology and Hindi as Research Center. 8 Assistant Professors of the college are guiding the students for Ph.D. research scholars for the degress. The fifth research journal "Surging Trsearch WEb" has been published by college and the work of publication of the sixth journal is in progress. The assistant professors of the college have participated in the reading of research papers, workshop and freshers courses in national research seminars. Along with book writing, the assistant professors of the college have received awards in various fields. In the current academic session, the research workshop is scheduled to be conducted through NAAC on 8th February 2020.

Alumnae activities:

As the world is facing covid 19 pandemic worldwide, Holy Cross Women's College organized Alumnae meet programme on Virtual Platform, through Google Meet for all ex-students from all over India and abroad participated enthusiastically. Everyone remembered and share their sweet memories of college days and Hostel’s Life experiences, presented their views and about life after college days. Many of them are now working in Government and Private sector as Assistant Professor, School Lecturer, Principals at Inter colleges, Doctors, CEO, Employment Officer, SP, IFS, IAS officer, Social Worker, Assistant General Manager FCI Delhi and many more. As an alumnae of this college, many of them are willing to do something for college.

Parents - Teachers Meet:

Due to covid 19 pandemic parents-teachers meeting was conducted through google meeting in the academic year 2019-20. The dates were fixed from 21.11.2019 to 30.11.2019 and parents and teachers discussed with each other about students through online mode, which was a new platform of learning again. The agenda of parents-teachers meet was to discuss was about the progress and growth of students. Parents were happy to know about the performance of their daughters. Teachers talked about the students in different areas, according to their performance in the class and other activities organized in the college through the year. Parents appreciated the efforts being made by teachers of the college and promised their cooperation. Some parents expressed their opinion to conduct offline classes for their daughters for better future.

Celebration of National/International Commemorative Days:

The college joined with our state and nation by celebrating the national and state level feasts, such as Dipawali, Inter-Religious gathering, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Id, Christmas, Teacher’s Day, College Day, Children’s Day, Yoga Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Human Rights Day, international HIV/AIDS day etc.

Action plan for the upcoming session of the college:

  • To gove all the information to students and parents online. 
  • To start classes of new PG courses M.Sc. Mathematics and M.A. Geography.
  • To start 4 years integrated courses B. Sc., B. Ed. and B. A. B.Ed.
  • To do all the library and office work online.

In view of the present time, the burning needs of the college are as follows:

  • Bus facility to encourage students in their extension education in rural areas.
  • Lift system in the college.
  • Establishment of Open Gym for the fitness of students.
  • Establishment of solar energy plants in order to save electricity power.
  • Water is life, hence develop waste water management system.
  • Auditorium with modern facilities.

The college family is always sensitive towards social concern and its responsibilities.  Therefore, it is decided to organize a workshop in the month of February 2019 by the college for mutual consultation and suggestions with parents.

             College family is thankful to Almighty God for His countless blessings  and for the support and cooperation of everyone linked, with spirit of commitment.
